'Excerpts from the Angel Handbook' by Kathleen Norris
Be careful how you unfold your wings --
there are some in the world who are not content
unless their teeth are full of feathers
You may find employment with the Sanitation Department
or at any laundry
When you cross at intersections look both ways, then up
Their logic will not make sense to you,
their mathematics especially will be impossible,
for you will never be able to divide anything
You will never tell a lie,
but you will have many secrets
You will meet some whose faces give a glow
as if they once had halos:
these are the lovers,
you will make a lot of love
... your flights, even though you are careful
to keep them invisible, will make those who love you sad:
they will not understand that you never go anyplace
you're not meant to be.

'Patience is the art of waiting ... the knowledge of time ... the discovering the mysterious pattern of cycles...
Persistence in life is being steadfast: persistence is stubborn ... grittier than perseverance. Perseverance is achievement's perspiration, persistence is its sweat. Persistence is knocking on Heaven's doors so often and so loudly on behalf of your dreams that eventually you'll be given what you want, just to shut you up.'

My favorite actor-director shot: with Jay Strauss during a very early blocking rehearsal of Arthur Miller's 'Playing for Time'. I think he's telling me to shut up. Photo by Drew.

My Irish Grandmother's House,

'What we truly and earnestly aspire to be, that in some sense we are. The mere aspiration, by changing the frame of mind, for the moment realizes itself.'

'Do not craze yourself with thinking, but go about your business anywhere. Life is not intellectual or critical, but sturdy. Its chief good is for well mixed people, who can enjoy what they find without question.'

Baldy, Marjia and Anja, my new, dear friends form the Jacksonville production of 'Wit', Anja and her wonderful mom are from Yugoslavia. This picture is taken by a server at the Alhambra Dinner theatre where we went one evening after rehearsal to see West Side Story. Anja just graduated an is a very, very talented actor/director - she did a great job in her various roles in Wit.
And now a bit about Marija: one evening in rehearsal I got really torn up in the code scene. My shoulder started spasming and on the break I went outside. I guess I was moaning a bit; I was in great pain. She came outside and immediately began massaging my shoulder and back, healing me with her touch and concerned care - something which our rehearsals had been sadly lacking. After the break, I was restored enough to go back in and continue on.
Before she left to go back home, Anja gave me this note which she had translated for her mother:
Dear Kim,
I'm so happy that I've met you. From your beautiful blue eyes shine joy, faith in the future, independence, energy, determination, even though your path was not easy.
I wish you all the best in your future work, and I started loving so much in this short period of time. Marija
Oh, the blessings!
